“Business Description & Story”
Z Puppets’ headquarters are located in South Minneapolis. Although most of our public events (performances, workshops, residencies) happen at other venues across the state and around the country, we have turned our storefront into a window art gallery. With support from the City of Minneapolis Arts & Cultural Affairs, Z Puppets has produced and hosted 3 Native Arts Festivals (including an Indigenous Short Film Festival), featured the work of Indigenous visual artists in the window gallery, commissioned murals and garden signs from Native artists and installed a Native plant rain garden . Z Puppets has been a popular site for the Doors Open Minneapolis citywide tour.
Since 1998, Z Puppets Rosenschnoz (ZPR) has been creating dynamic live performances, music videos and web series that engage people of all ages through the power of playfulness. We turn complex topics — cell division, finding calm, treaties, sovereignty— into fun and meaningful experiences. Families tell us that they talk about the ideas, songs and characters from our shows for years afterwards.
Led by Creative Directors Chris Griffith (a Cherokee Nation citizen) and Shari Aronson, Z Puppets has toured 30+ original shows for family audiences, across Minnesota and around the country.
In response to the Cherokee declaration of emergency for the language in 2019, we began creating shows for audiences to see and hear the Cherokee language.
A career highlight has been our live and streaming musical adventures into Cherokee Futurism featured at venues such as the Ordway Performing Arts Center, Fond Du Lac Tribal College, Walker Arts Center, MN State Fair and Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
Z Puppets has earned honors and support nationally from the Jim Henson Foundation, Puppeteers of America, Network of Ensemble Theaters, Parents' Choice, Creative Child Magazine, NDN Collective, Tiwahe Foundation, Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, City of Minneapolis plus, 41 Minnesota State Arts Board grants. Behold! The power of playfulness.
