“Business Description & Story”
African Village Safari is a culturally responsive children’s storytelling and book business founded by a former 4th-grade teacher who grew up in Africa. The business takes young readers on a pretend safari — a journey of exploration through authentic African stories, artifacts, and traditions. Originally developed in the classroom to counter negative perceptions of Africa, the stories were written down as children’s books available in hardcover ($25) and paperback ($16).

In the 1990s, as a 4th-grade teacher, I noticed my students had deeply negative perceptions of Africa — disease, hunger, poverty, animals. I began bringing African stories, artifacts, and music into my classroom, weaving cultural education into everyday subjects. Other teachers started inviting me to their classrooms. That spark became African Village Safari: a storytelling business that takes children on a pretend safari to Africa, celebrating its richness, beauty, and wisdom. The stories I told have now been written as children's books, carrying those lessons to readers everywhere.
Storytelling is a core delivery system for knowledge in African cultures. The books are culturally aligned with universal lessons that resonate across backgrounds, while honoring African heritage, oral tradition, and community values.
